Rates of Deforestation

Deforestation rates quoted on a 'per year' basis are rough estimates. Deforestation peaks during the dry season and so, the deforestation counter on our homepage is indicative of an overall pattern rather than actual events on the ground.

Here's how we arrived at that figure of 2000 square meters lost every second. To err on the side of caution we took the lower of the two estimates that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) used when calculating deforestation rates, 6,000,000 ha/yr

  • Annual deforestation rate 6,000,000 ha/yr
  • Daily deforestation rate 16,438 ha/day
  • Hourly deforestation rate 685 ha/hr
  • Deforestation rate per minute 11 ha/min
  • Deforestation rate per second 0.19 ha/sec

Based on the figures at our disposal, we can work out that, on average throughout the year, in 140 seconds, about 40 football pitches-worth of rainforest will be lost. If 1Ha = 10,000 square meters, then 2000 square meters are lost per second.

In terms of scale, that equates to about one football pitch lost every 3.6 seconds. To be slightly more conservative and allow a margin of error, we have rounded up to one football pitch lost every 4 seconds.
