NGOs

‘We are working with the N.G.O. community because I am determined that this will be the largest ever public/private/N.G.O. sector partnership. The scale of the problem demands nothing less. We have to find a way to make the forests worth more alive than dead.’ - HRH The Prince of Wales

NGOs play a critical role in helping to protect what is left of the world’s rainforests. They raise public awareness, carry out research, make the case for new policies and channel some of the resources needed to protect particular areas of forest.

The Prince’s Rainforests Project is not looking to re-invent the wheel or to duplicate the excellent work already underway, but we do wish to complement the work of those already working to halt deforestation. We aim to do this by harnessing the latest and best knowledge in helping to shape the future policies of decision-makers in international business and government.

In the Focus on Rainforest Nations area of the site (looking at Africa, Oceania and Asia, and the Americas), there are examples of projects. In each of these examples we have considered forest conservation, sustainable income generation, and biodiversity benefits.

There is also a blank template, downloadable here as a word document or pdf,  which we invite you to complete if you have an initiative or project which fits the guidelines. This is intended to demonstrate the range of activity focused on conserving forest and is not for fundraising purposes.

In addition, in the Show Your Support area, we are asking NGOs to register with our Project. In the future we will have a Google map so you can also place pins on the locations of your projects. We will use the map to flag up the mass of activity already underway to save the rainforests. We hope that by demonstrating the great diversity of action that we will inspire further collaboration.

There is also a list of pledges which we would like NGOs to consider.

If we are to tackle the vast momentum of deforestation, we do indeed need to foster collaboration, coordinate different activities and to form partnerships.
